SERVICE ENGINEER
Are you mechanically and electrically minded, practical with your hands and interested in turning those skills into a career?
We’re looking for an experienced or developing engineer to join our Northampton team. You don’t necessarily need experience repairing industrial cleaning equipment — but you do need genuine mechanical ability, electrical aptitude and the drive to learn.

We’re not looking for someone with no technical ability who simply likes the idea of becoming an engineer.
We’re looking for somebody who is already mechanically minded, electrically aware and naturally interested in how things work.
You might already be an engineer. Or perhaps you work on cars or motorbikes in your spare time, studied engineering, repaired machinery or have always been the person people turn to when something needs fixing.
Previous experience with scrubber dryers, sweepers, industrial vacuums or pressure washers is useful — but we can teach the right person our specialist equipment.
Engineering ability isn’t always written on a CV.
We want someone who enjoys diagnosing problems, understands the fundamentals of mechanical and electrical systems and takes pride in getting something working properly again.
If you’ve got that underlying ability but haven’t yet been given the opportunity to turn it into a professional engineering career, we want to hear about it.
TWO ROUTES. ONE ENGINEERING TEAM.
We’re interested in experienced engineers, but we’re equally interested in finding somebody with the right raw ability who needs an opportunity to develop.
Experienced Engineer
You may already work in field service, mechanical or electrical maintenance, automotive, plant, pressure washers, cleaning machinery or another transferable engineering environment.
Your existing diagnostic and repair skills could transfer very well into the varied machinery supported by R&S.
Trainee / Apprenticeship Route
You may not have worked as a field service engineer yet, but you must be able to demonstrate genuine mechanical ability, electrical aptitude and a real interest in engineering.
For the right person, we can consider structured training and, where appropriate, an apprenticeship or formal development route alongside hands-on experience at R&S.
THE NON-NEGOTIABLES
We can teach you our equipment. These are the qualities and capabilities we need you to bring with you.
Field engineers travel to customer sites throughout our service area. Unfortunately, we cannot consider engineering applicants who do not hold a full UK driving licence.
NOT THE SAME JOB EVERY DAY
One of the best things about engineering at R&S is the variety.
Our engineers work across scrubber dryers, sweepers, industrial vacuums, pressure washers and other professional cleaning machinery. That means mechanical systems, electrics, batteries, motors, pumps, heating systems, controls and fault diagnosis.
Some days you’ll be repairing equipment in our Northampton workshop. Other days you’ll be visiting customers, diagnosing a breakdown, carrying out planned maintenance or helping a customer understand their equipment.
For somebody who genuinely enjoys fixing things, there is always something new to understand.
WHAT WOULD I ACTUALLY BE DOING?
You’ll develop across workshop engineering, field service, diagnostics and customer support rather than being confined to one repetitive task.
Repair & Refurbish
Diagnose faults, dismantle equipment, replace components, service machinery and return machines to working condition.
Work on Real Machinery
Develop the skills to diagnose and repair a wide variety of commercial and industrial equipment.
Mechanical & Electrical
Work with pumps, motors, batteries, wiring, switches, heating systems, controls and electrical fault diagnosis.
Become the Expert
As your knowledge develops, become someone customers trust to diagnose problems, explain solutions and demonstrate equipment.
PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE COUNTS
Your engineering ability doesn’t necessarily have to come from your current job.
Tell us about what you’ve repaired, maintained, diagnosed or built — whether that happened at work, college, during an apprenticeship or in your own garage.
We’re interested in people who already demonstrate an engineering mindset and want the opportunity to take it further.

TURN PRACTICAL ABILITY INTO A CAREER
For a developing engineer, the exact training route will depend on your existing skills and experience. For the right candidate, this may include structured training or an apprenticeship alongside hands-on development within R&S.

Worked on cars? Rebuilt a motorbike? Studied engineering? Repaired machinery? Used a multimeter to find an electrical fault? Tell us what you’ve actually done.
Before You Apply
Essential. The role involves travelling to customer sites as you develop into field engineering.
You need genuine practical ability and should be comfortable working with tools and machinery.
You should understand basic electrics and be willing to develop your diagnostic knowledge.
Reliability, willingness to learn and professional behaviour with customers are essential.
If your best evidence of engineering ability comes from cars, bikes, machinery or projects outside work, include it.
