Industrial Applications

Controlled Dust Collection Around Production Equipment

Fine combustible dust can accumulate around machinery, process lines and production equipment. Where the area has been classified as ATEX Zone 22, vacuum cleaning equipment must be appropriate for that environment.

The ATTIX 40 Type 22 provides a compact mobile solution for professional housekeeping and dust collection where its technical classification is appropriate to the site’s assessed risk.

Bakery & Food Production

Flour Dust Requires More Than A Broom

Flour dust presents an occupational health risk and, under certain conditions, can also create a combustible dust hazard. Dry sweeping can disturb settled flour and release dust back into the breathing zone rather than capturing it.

Where a bakery or food-production area has been classified as ATEX Zone 22, cleaning equipment must be suitable for that classified environment. The ATTIX 40 Type 22 combines Zone 22 suitability with M-Class hazardous-dust filtration in a compact professional machine.

Important: not every bakery area is ATEX Zone 22.

The presence of flour alone does not automatically classify an entire bakery as an explosive atmosphere. The site’s DSEAR risk assessment and hazardous-area classification should determine whether ATEX-rated equipment is required in a particular location.

Food Manufacturing

Dust Control Across Food Production

The same principles extend beyond bread production. Flour, cereals, starch, sugar and other powdered ingredients can require carefully controlled housekeeping and industrial vacuum systems selected for the particular material and working environment.

Important

Does Your Site Actually Require A Type 22 Vacuum?

Combustible dust can create an explosion risk, but the presence of flour or another combustible powder does not automatically mean that every room or production area is classified as ATEX Zone 22.

The hazardous-area classification should come from the site’s risk assessment and DSEAR process. Once the area classification and the material being collected are known, the correct vacuum and accessory configuration can be selected for the application.

Already have a DSEAR assessment?

Send R&S the hazardous-area classification together with details of the dust or material being collected and how the vacuum will be used.

We can then help you identify an appropriate Nilfisk industrial vacuum and suitable conductive accessories for the application.

Use The Correct Conductive Accessories

For Type 22 applications the vacuum cleaner is only one part of the complete cleaning system. Hoses, tubes, floor tools and other accessories should be appropriate to the intended application and machine specification.

01

Conductive Hose

Use a hose intended for the relevant Type 22 application rather than substituting a conventional non-conductive vacuum hose.

02

Conductive Floor Tools

Floor and cleaning tools should form part of the correctly specified conductive accessory system.

03

Correct Filters

Replacement filtration should meet the manufacturer’s stated requirements for the particular machine and dust classification.

04

Correct Disposal

Collected hazardous material should be handled and disposed of in accordance with the site’s procedures and the substance involved.

Questions & Answers

Nilfisk ATTIX 40 Type 22 FAQs

Common questions around M-Class filtration, Type 22 industrial vacuums and ATEX Zone 22 applications.

What is the Nilfisk ATTIX 40 Type 22?
The ATTIX 40 Type 22 is a compact professional M-Class safety vacuum designed for suitable applications in appropriately classified ATEX Zone 22 environments.
Is the ATTIX 40 Type 22 suitable for flour dust?
It may be suitable where the material, application and hazardous-area classification match the machine’s specification. Flour dust can present both occupational-health and combustible-dust risks, so the site’s risk assessment and DSEAR classification should be considered before machine selection.
Does every bakery require an ATEX Zone 22 vacuum?
No. The presence of flour does not automatically mean every area of a bakery is ATEX Zone 22. Hazardous areas should be identified through the site’s risk assessment and DSEAR hazardous-area classification.
What does M-Class mean?
M-Class is a hazardous-dust classification used for professional dust extraction and vacuum equipment. The correct dust class should be selected according to the material and the relevant workplace risk assessment.
Why are conductive Type 22 accessories important?
For relevant combustible-dust applications, the complete vacuum system must be correctly configured. Suitable conductive hoses and tools help control electrostatic charging and should be selected in accordance with the machine manufacturer’s specification.
Can R&S service Type 22 industrial vacuums?
R&S provides servicing, repairs and parts support for professional industrial cleaning equipment. Relevant inspection, testing and calibration procedures are carried out as applicable to the particular machine and manufacturer requirements.
